What voids an appliance warranty (and how to avoid it)

The quickest way to lose appliance cover isn't dramatic — it's usually a missed registration deadline, a skipped service, or a lost receipt. Manufacturers attach conditions to their warranties, and breaking one can void your claim exactly when you need it.

Here are the most common reasons UK appliance warranties get voided, and how to avoid each one.

The most common warranty-killers

  1. Missing the registration window. Many warranties (especially boilers) must be registered within a set period — often 30 days. Miss it and you can drop to a shorter default term.
  2. Skipping required servicing. Longer guarantees usually require an annual service — for boilers, by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A missed year can void the cover.
  3. Losing proof of purchase. No receipt makes a claim much harder. Keep it from day one.
  4. Unauthorised or DIY repairs. Repairs outside the approved network, or using non-approved parts, can void cover.
  5. Improper installation. If an appliance wasn't installed to the manufacturer's spec (or by a required accredited installer), claims can be refused.
  6. Misuse or neglect. Damage from incorrect use, or from not maintaining the appliance as instructed, typically isn't covered.

You still have a backstop

Even if a manufacturer voids a warranty, remember the second layer of UK protection: the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a claim against the retailer for up to six years (five in Scotland) if goods weren't of satisfactory quality. It's separate from the manufacturer's warranty — we explain both in the guide to appliance warranties.

How to avoid voiding your cover

  • Register every new appliance the day it's installed.
  • Diarise annual services and keep the certificates (essential for boiler warranties).
  • Store the receipt, model and serial number, and warranty terms together.
  • Use approved engineers and parts for any repair.

How JustTaggit helps

JustTaggit keeps each appliance's receipt, registration, model/serial number and service history attached to a QR code on the item itself — so you can prove you've met the warranty conditions in seconds, and you get reminders before a service falls due. That turns "I think I'm still covered" into "here's the proof."

Frequently asked questions

Does a DIY repair void my warranty?

Often, yes. Most manufacturers require repairs to be carried out by approved engineers using approved parts. An unauthorised repair can void the warranty for that fault and sometimes more broadly — check your terms before touching it.

Can a manufacturer refuse a claim if I've lost the receipt?

They can ask for proof of purchase, and without it a claim is harder. A card statement, order email or retailer order history can sometimes work. Storing the receipt digitally on day one avoids the problem.

If my warranty is void, am I completely out of options?

Not necessarily. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you rights against the retailer (not the manufacturer) for up to six years if the goods weren't of satisfactory quality — separate from any voided manufacturer's warranty.

Does moving house affect an appliance warranty?

It can. Some warranties are tied to the original purchaser or address and aren't transferable. If you're buying or selling a home, check whether appliance cover transfers.
