How to find any appliance's model and serial number
On this page
The model and serial number live on the appliance's rating plate — a small printed or metal label fixed to the unit itself. The model number tells you what the product is; the serial number identifies your specific unit. You'll need both to claim on a warranty, order the right spare part, or book a repair, so it's worth knowing exactly where to look.
Where to look, by appliance
| Appliance | Where the rating plate usually is |
|---|---|
| Washing machine / dishwasher | Around the door opening, on the back, or in the detergent-drawer recess |
| Fridge / freezer | Inside, on a side wall near the salad drawer, or on the back |
| Oven / cooker | Around the door frame, on the bottom edge, or behind a drawer |
| Boiler | Under the unit, behind/inside the front cover, or in the manual |
| TV / electronics | On the back panel |
If you can't see it, open every door and drawer and check the frame and edges — manufacturers tuck the plate somewhere it won't show in normal use.
Why you need these numbers
- Warranty claims — manufacturers ask for the model and serial number to verify cover. (See what voids an appliance warranty.)
- Ordering parts — the right part depends on the exact model and sometimes the serial/production batch.
- Repairs — engineers can look up the manual, common faults and spares before they arrive.
- Resale — the serial number helps prove provenance when you sell.
Do it once, never again
Crawling behind the washing machine is a once-per-appliance job if you record it the first time. Photograph the rating plate, and note the model and serial number somewhere you'll actually find them again.
How JustTaggit helps
Stick a QR code on the appliance and save a photo of the rating plate, plus the model and serial number, against it. Next time an engineer asks — or you're filing a warranty claim — you scan the code instead of getting on your hands and knees with a torch. It's all part of keeping your appliance warranties and boiler cover easy to act on.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a model number and a serial number?
The model number identifies the product type (so it's shared by every unit of that model), while the serial number is unique to your specific appliance. Warranty claims and parts orders usually need both.
Where is the rating plate on a washing machine?
Commonly around the door opening (visible when the door is open), on the back panel, or on the rear of the detergent drawer recess. It lists the model and serial number along with electrical ratings.
Where do I find my boiler's serial number?
Usually on a label under the boiler, behind or inside the front cover, or in the installation manual. If it's hard to reach, take a photo once and save it.
What if the label has worn off?
Check the original manual, your purchase receipt or order confirmation, or the installer's paperwork — the model and serial number are often recorded there too.
